Blackberry Internet service

Hello Everyone,
I always wanted to wright blog on Telecom technology not only because it’s my bread and butter but working, learning or doing something in Telecom is my passion.
So here i am with my first Telecom Blog.
I choose to start with Blackberry as they were Telecom leader in terms on innovation at one point of time (Yes u heard right “one point of time”) u cannot be number one for long, if u do not give consumer what they want “after 1 year”, Yes to be a leader u have to predict their future requirement which even consumer don't know. As said u cannot develop what consumer want, as by the time u bring your product they want something else.
Without diverting this Blog to consumer need analysis
Let me wright about one of the technology of Blackberry called as BIS (Blackberry Internet Service)
Well in simple words BIS is a service in your BB enabled or BB device which provides email message access. When i say BB enabled i mean phone which supports BB for e.g. 3 years back Nokia, HTC had phone which supported BB service through an application called as BB connect.
So what is difference between receiving email on any other phone and BB?
The difference is push & pull(Blackberry provides you Push service, well there can be a debate that other brands to have push service, but they cannot be called as true push mail will explain you the reason in upcoming Blog)

So Courier delivered in your hand is push and you have to go and collect from office is pull.
So from the above context if mail is send to your phone it’s Push and if your phone as to ping to retrieve its pull
So question comes how my mail travels from my mail server to the BB handheld,
Here comes in picture something called as BB infrastructure
Almost all mobile network operators” in the world are connected with something called as Blackberry infrastructure (precisely total there are 3 BB infrastructures in the world)
This Infrastructure has lots of component in them, one of them called as Blackberry Internet service (BIS).
BIS connect with your mail server with the help of username and password provided by you with the help of operator (When you opt for Blackberry service from operator he gives u an access to web portal where u have to enter username and password of your email account)
So now if you look at the whole LAN connectivity “Phone connected with operator – Operator connected with BB infrastructure – BB infrastructure connected with your mail id”
One more question which should come to your mind is why the hell mail id will allow BB infrastructure to connect. The answer is “the connection is IMAP or POP based which is a standard for receiving mail remotely”. (To know more about POP and IMAP go to Google or wait for my next blogJ)
So the BB Infrastructure keeps pinging for new mail if its POP account and if its IMAP it gets a notification from the mail server.
Once the mail is received its been Compressed in SMIME format which reduces its size up to 70% and it send to operator and operator sends it to BB handheld, Now your Blackberry Handheld will decompress and convert it in standard MIME format and you are able to read it,
To make it easy i have added the flow chart image on the same.
Hope this gives you basic idea about how you receive your email in BB, and also on the other side u will have now lots of question to ask me
Let me ask you question how does the mail is made sure that it reached to a particular handset only?

Wait for next blogs for the answer

Thank you
